What Is SSC CHSL Exam?

What is SSC CHSL exam for? It is a national level exam by the Staff Selection Commission to recruit 12th pass candidates for Group C clerical posts in central government ministries, departments and offices.

Posts filled through CHSL are:

• Lower Division Clerk (LDC) and Junior Secretariat Assistant (JSA): file work, data maintenance, office support and typing work.
• Data Entry Operator (DEO) and DEO Grade A: high speed data entry, record management and computer based reporting work.

Is SSC CHSL conducted every year? Yes. SSC conducts CHSL every year, subject to the annual exam calendar. The selection has no interview. Candidates clear Tier 1, then Tier 2, then the Skill Test or Typing Test, followed by document verification.

For 12th pass students, this is the most stable desk job entry into central government service.

Dates and Last Date

Is SSC CHSL 2026 notification out? Yes. SSC released it on 7 September 2026. The ssc chsl 2026 exam date for Tier 1 and Tier 2 is not announced yet. SSC will notify the schedule separately on ssc.gov.in.

Vacancy: 2536 Posts Split

The ssc chsl vacancy 2026 stands at 2536 tentative posts. SSC has not released the final post wise split yet. The detailed breakup by post and by category (General, OBC, SC, ST, EWS) will be published later.

A backlog vacancy means a post reserved for SC, ST, OBC or PwBD that remained unfilled in an earlier cycle and is carried forward. If such posts are included, SSC lists them separately in the final vacancy table.

For context, recent cycles had around 3712 posts in 2024 and around 3522 revised posts in 2025. The 2026 figure of 2536 is tentative and can change after final confirmation.

Who Can Apply?

Check three conditions before you fill the ssc chsl 2026 application form date window: nationality, education and age.

Nationality

You must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came before 1 January 1962, or a person of Indian origin who migrated from specified countries with intent to settle permanently. Most applicants apply under Indian citizenship.

Education

• For LDC, JSA and most DEO posts: You must have passed Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised board or university.
• For DEO and DEO Grade A in Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Ministry of Culture and select posts: You must have passed Class 12 in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject.
• Candidates appearing in Class 12 can also apply, but they must produce proof of passing by the cutoff date given in the notification.

Graduates can also apply. There is no bar on higher qualification, if you meet the age limit.

Age Limit

Age is counted as on 1 August 2026. You must be 18 to 27 years old on that date. It means you must be born between 2 August 1999 and 1 August 2008, both dates included.

Age relaxation applies as per central government rules:

Non-creamy layer means the OBC certificate must be valid for central government jobs and issued within the period specified in the notice. Keep the certificate ready before document verification.

How To Apply Online

How to apply SSC CHSL 2026? Apply only on ssc.gov.in. The process has two parts: One Time Registration (OTR) and the CHSL specific form.

OTR registration means a one time profile on the SSC portal with your name, date of birth, mobile, email and ID details. Once created, you can use the same registration number for all SSC exams.

Follow these steps for ssc chsl apply online 2026:

1. Visit ssc.gov.in and complete OTR if you are a new user. Verify mobile and email with OTP.
2. Log in with registration number and password. Go to Apply and select CHSL 2026.
3. Fill education, address, category and three exam city choices within the same region.
4. Complete Aadhaar authentication if asked. Capture live photo as per new rules.
5. Upload signature in the prescribed size and format.
6. Pay the fee online and click Final Submit.
7. Download and save the submitted form PDF for future use.

New Rules: Live Photo and Aadhaar

SSC has added strict checks this year:

• Live photo capture: You must capture a live photo through webcam or the mySSC app. Old scanned photos are not accepted.
• Aadhaar authentication: Keep Aadhaar linked mobile active for verification.
• Exam city allocation logic: You select three cities in one region. SSC allots one based on availability. The allotted centre cannot be changed later.

Keep Class 10 marksheet (for name and birth proof), Class 12 marksheet, valid photo ID, category certificate number and working email and mobile ready before you start.

Fees and Correction Rules

You can pay through BHIM UPI, net banking, debit card or credit card. The last date for fee payment is 8 October 2026 up to 11 PM. A form without successful fee payment is treated as incomplete.

The correction window charges follow the recent SSC pattern. SSC opens the window from 14 to 16 October 2026. You can correct permitted fields twice, with a fee of around ₹200 for the first correction and ₹500 for the second. The correction fee applies to all candidates, even those exempted from the application fee. Details like exam city, photo and minor personal details can be edited, but OTR core details have limited editing.

Scribe and fee concession norms: PwBD candidates eligible for scribe get extra time in the exam and in the typing test. They must follow the scribe registration process given in the notice and carry the scribe entry pass on exam day.

Exam Pattern: Tier 1, 2

Selection is through Tier 1 plus Tier 2 plus Skill Test or Typing Test, followed by document verification. Both Tier 1 and Tier 2 are computer based tests. If held in multiple shifts, marks are normalised.

Tier 1 Pattern

Tier 1 is a screening test with 100 questions for 200 marks in 60 minutes (80 minutes for scribe eligible candidates). Each question carries 2 marks. Wrong answers lose 0.50 marks.

Tier 2 Pattern

Tier 2 decides final merit. It has two sessions on the same day.

Session 1 runs for 2 hours 15 minutes and includes:

• Section 1: Module 1 Mathematical Abilities (30 questions) and Module 2 Reasoning and General Intelligence (30 questions)
• Section 2: Module 1 English Language and Comprehension (40 questions) and Module 2 General Awareness (25 questions)
• Section 3: Module 1 Computer Knowledge Test (15 questions)

Total in Session 1 is 135 questions for 405 marks. Each question carries 3 marks. Wrong answers in Section 1, Section 2 and Module 1 of Section 3 lose 1 mark.

Session 2 is the Skill Test or Typing Test:

• For LDC and JSA: Typing test for 10 minutes. Speed needed is about 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi. In key depression terms, it is around 10,500 key depressions per hour.
• For DEO: Skill test for 15 minutes. Speed needed is 8,000 key depressions per hour, and 15,000 key depressions per hour for DEO in C and AG.
• Candidates opting for Hindi typing must use Mangal font only. Any other font leads to disqualification in that test.
• Scribe eligible candidates get extra time, with typing test extended to 15 minutes where applicable.

Tier 2 Syllabus

• Mathematical Abilities: advanced algebra, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, statistics and probability in addition to Tier 1 arithmetic.
• Reasoning and General Intelligence: logical reasoning, puzzles, series, coding and data sufficiency at a higher level.

Salary and Job Profile

Salary follows the 7th Pay Commission with Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA) and Transport Allowance (TA). DA means extra pay linked to inflation. HRA means house rent support based on city type. TA means monthly transport support.

Starting basic pay is ₹19,900 for LDC and JSA and ₹25,500 for most DEO posts, with Level 5 DEO starting at ₹29,200. Actual in-hand varies by city class (X for metros, Y for big cities, Z for smaller towns) and current DA rate.

Job profile is office based with fixed hours, job security, pension through NPS, medical benefits and steady promotion. A common path is LDC to UDC (Upper Division Clerk) to Assistant to Section Officer through seniority and departmental exams.

Is SSC CHSL tough? No, the syllabus is Class 12 level and easier than CGL. Is SSC CHSL easy to crack? Not without a plan, because nearly 30 lakh registrations compete for a few thousand posts.

Three facts decide selection:

• Tier 1 is qualifying in nature for merit filtering, but Tier 2 marks decide the final merit list. Every mark counts.
