The Army shortlists applications on engineering marks and calls candidates for 5 day SSB, followed by medicals and a merit list.
What is TGC in Indian Army? TGC is the Permanent Commission technical entry that trains at the Indian Military Academy (IMA) Dehradun for 12 months. On passing out, cadets become Lieutenants in technical arms like Engineers, Signals and EME and serve till retirement age with full pension benefits.

- TGC 144 is the current cycle. It offers 30 tentative posts for the January 2027 course at IMA. Applications ran from 13 May to 11 June 2026 through joinindianarmy.nic.in.
- Only BE, BTech and MSc Computer Science degrees in notified streams are accepted. Final year students can apply provisionally if they submit proof of passing by 01 January 2027.
- Selection is shortlisting plus SSB at Prayagraj, Bhopal, Bengaluru or Jalandhar, plus medicals. Cutoff is fixed stream wise. Is TGC permanent commission? Yes. The Indian Army grants Permanent Commission to every cadet who completes TGC training at IMA Dehradun. The officer serves till retirement age, earns regular promotions to Captain, Major, Lieutenant Colonel and higher, and receives pension and ex servicemen benefits.
TGC is permanent or temporary is a common doubt because both TGC and SSC Tech use the same SSB process. The difference is the terms of engagement:

Note SSC Tech officers get the same rank, pay and duties while in service. The gap appears only after 10 to 14 years, in pension, seniority and long term promotion.
What Is SSC Tech Entry
SSC Tech stands for Short Service Commission Technical entry. It is the parallel direct SSB entry for engineering graduates who want to serve as officers for a fixed tenure. The course starts twice a year for April and October batches.
The SSC Tech 68th Men and Women course for April 2027 offers 381 posts. This includes 350 posts for SSC Tech Men, 29 posts for SSCW Tech Women and 2 posts for widows of defence personnel. Applications opened on 08 July 2026 for women and 09 July 2026 for men and closed on 06 August and 07 August 2026. There is no application fee.
Training is for 49 weeks at the Pre Commission Training Academy at OTA Gaya in Bihar. On passing out, cadets also become Lieutenants at the same Level 10 pay as TGC officers.
TGC entry eligibility for female candidates is a repeated query. TGC is male only. Women engineers must apply through SSCW Tech. Widows up to 35 years can apply under the special widow category.

Training, Tenure and Promotion
Training contrast of IMA Dehradun 12 months versus OTA Chennai or OTA Gaya 49 weeks confuses many aspirants. Both courses produce Lieutenants, but the career path after passing out is different.
TGC cadets train at IMA Dehradun for one year with regular Permanent Commission cadets. SSC Tech cadets train at OTA Gaya for 49 weeks with Short Service cadets. Daily routine, drill, weapon training, tactics and SSB medical standards are equally tough at both academies. The stipend during training is the same fixed stipend of ₹56,100 per month.
After commissioning:
- TGC officers continue without break till retirement. Promotions to Captain after 2 years, Major after 6 years and Lieutenant Colonel after 13 years follow the normal time scale, with higher ranks by selection.
- SSC Tech officers serve 10 years. Those found suitable can opt for a 4 year extension to complete 14 years. Those who want Permanent Commission are considered in the 10th year on record, performance and vacancy. If not granted Permanent Commission, they are released with gratuity and resettlement support.
- Seniority of SSC officers is adjusted at Captain level to balance the shorter 49 week training against the longer IMA training. This is a routine service rule and does not affect pay during service.
- For merit out candidates, the Army sometimes offers TGC recommended but merit out candidates a chance to join the SSC Tech course in the same stream if vacancies remain unutilised. The reverse is not available. An SSC Tech merit out candidate must apply fresh in the next cycle.

The current structure is basic pay of ₹56,100 plus Military Service Pay of ₹15,500 per month.
