Introduction

Thousands of aspirants clear IBPS RRB Prelims every year and still miss selection, not because of weak aptitude but because they prepared the wrong topics. The IBPS RRB syllabus 2026 is not a copy of IBPS Clerk or IBPS PO. In Mains, Computer Knowledge is a separate full section worth 20 marks, and General Awareness leans heavily on rural and cooperative banking. Aspirants who master these two easy sections quietly overtake hundreds on the merit list.

This article covers the exact syllabus and exam pattern for the two most popular posts under CRP RRBs XV: Office Assistant (Multipurpose) and Officer Scale I. You will get the complete Prelims and Mains pattern with sectional timing, subject wise topic lists, negative marking of 0.25, the choice between English and Hindi, and how final merit is decided. IBPS RRB Syllabus 2026: Highlights

The IBPS RRB syllabus 2026 is defined in the official CRP RRBs XV notification dated 01 September 2026. Office Assistant and Officer Scale I follow a two tier structure: Preliminary then Main. The difference is that Officer Scale I adds a Common Interview after Mains, while Office Assistant is allotted directly on Mains marks.

Here is the quick structure for both posts before we go topic by topic.

Key points to remember about the pattern:

• Both Prelims and Mains are objective and online. Officer Scale II and III appear for a single level examination and are not part of this guide.
• In Prelims you must clear the cutoff in both tests to be shortlisted for Mains. In Mains you must clear the sectional cutoff in every test.
• Candidates can choose either English or Hindi for the language section in Mains. You can also choose the medium of the other tests as per the State or UT you apply for.
• Every wrong answer carries a penalty of 0.25 marks. Blank answers carry no penalty.

IBPS RRB Exam Pattern 2026

The exam pattern decides how you manage time, so read the tables carefully. Both posts have 80 questions for 80 marks in Prelims, and 200 questions for 200 marks in Mains.

Candidates can opt for either 4a or 4b. IBPS reserves the right to modify the structure, and any change will be published on ibps.in. The Information Handout with full details will be available for download along with the call letter.

Note: General Awareness and Computer Knowledge together give you 60 marks in just 30 minutes in Mains. These are the fastest scoring sections if prepared daily, and they are exactly where most aspirants lose rank.

IBPS RRB Office Assistant Syllabus

The Office Assistant syllabus is the same for Prelims and Mains for Reasoning and Numerical Ability. The difference is only the level of difficulty. Mains adds General Awareness, Computer Knowledge and the English or Hindi language section.

IBPS does not publish a chapter wise PDF. The scope is clear from the notification structure and previous year papers. Here is the subject wise topic list you must prepare.

Reasoning Syllabus

Reasoning carries 40 marks in Prelims and 50 marks in Mains. Puzzles and seating arrangements dominate this section, so give them maximum time.

• Puzzles: floor and box based, scheduling, comparison, classification, distribution and mixed variable puzzles
• Seating arrangements: linear, circular, square and rectangular, parallel rows, facing inside or outside
• Syllogism (basic and possibility)
• Inequalities (direct and coded)
• Coding and decoding
• Blood relations
• Direction and distance
• Ordering and ranking
• Data sufficiency (two and three statements)
• Arrangement and pattern, alphanumeric series
• Input output (more important in Mains)
• Verbal reasoning: statement and conclusion, statement and assumption, cause and effect

Numerical Ability Syllabus

Numerical Ability gives 40 marks in Prelims and 50 marks in Mains. Data Interpretation and arithmetic word problems carry the highest weight.

• Simplification and approximation (BODMAS, fractions, decimals, surds, squares and cubes)
• Number series (missing, wrong and double pattern)
• Quadratic equations and quantity comparison
• Data Interpretation: table, bar, line, pie, caselet, mixed and missing DI
• Data sufficiency
• Arithmetic: percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, discount, simple and compound interest, partnership, ages
• Time and work, pipes and cisterns
• Time, speed and distance, trains, boats and streams
• Mixture and alligation
• Mensuration (area, volume, surface area)
• Permutation and combination, probability (basic)

General Awareness Syllabus

General Awareness gives 40 marks in only 15 minutes. This is a pure knowledge section. There is no calculation, so the candidate who has revised daily scores here.

• Current affairs of the last six months: national and international events, government schemes, appointments, awards, sports, books and authors, reports and indices
• Banking awareness: functions of banks, RBI role and functions, monetary policy, repo rate and reverse repo rate, CRR, SLR, NABARD and its role
• Rural and cooperative banking: financial inclusion, priority sector lending, microfinance, government schemes linked to farming and villages
• Indian economy: budget highlights, economic survey, inflation, GDP basics
• Static awareness: capitals, currencies, headquarters of financial institutions, important days

Computer Knowledge Syllabus

Computer Knowledge gives 20 marks in 15 minutes. It is factual, simple and the easiest section to secure if you revise a small set of basics.

• History and generations of computers
• Computer fundamentals: hardware, software, input and output devices
• Memory: RAM, ROM, cache, primary and secondary memory
• Operating systems and computer languages
• MS Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, shortcut keys
• Internet and networking basics: LAN, WAN, MAN, protocols, browsers
• Basics of DBMS and number system conversions
• Computer abbreviations and security: virus, firewall, phishing, cyber security

English and Hindi Syllabus

You choose either English or Hindi and this section gives 40 marks in 30 minutes. Choose the language in which you read and answer faster.

English Language topics:

• Reading comprehension with inference and tone based questions
• Cloze test and sentence fillers (single and double)
• Error detection and sentence correction
• Para jumbles and sentence rearrangement
• Phrase replacement and word usage
• Vocabulary in context: synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases
• Grammar: tenses, subject verb agreement, articles, prepositions, active and passive voice, direct and indirect speech

Hindi Language topics follow the same structure: reading comprehension, fillers, error detection, word meanings, synonyms and antonyms, idioms and rearranging sentences. The English version of the question paper prevails if there is any difference in translation.

IBPS RRB Officer Scale I Syllabus

The Officer Scale I syllabus is almost identical to Office Assistant, but the difficulty level is higher and Quantitative Aptitude replaces Numerical Ability by name. General Awareness, Computer Knowledge and the language section are the same. What changes is the depth of questions, especially in Reasoning and Quant.

Reasoning Syllabus

• Advanced puzzles: floor and box with multiple variables, scheduling, designation, comparison and circular arrangements with extra conditions
• Seating arrangements: linear, circular, square, rectangular and parallel rows
• Syllogism, inequality (direct and coded)
• Coding and decoding, blood relations, direction and distance
• Data sufficiency, input output, alphanumeric series
• Statement based logical reasoning: course of action, assumptions, conclusions

Puzzles and seating arrangements carry the highest weight here too, and the conditions are longer. Practise one full puzzle set daily with a timer to build the speed needed for 40 questions in 30 minutes.

Quantitative Aptitude Syllabus

• Simplification and approximation, number series, quadratic equations
• Data Interpretation: table, bar, line, pie, caselet, mixed and arithmetic based DI
• Data sufficiency and quantity comparison
• Arithmetic: percentage, ratio and proportion, average, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, partnership, ages
• Time and work, pipes and cisterns
• Time, speed and distance, trains, boats and streams
• Mixture and alligation, mensuration
• Permutation and combination, probability

Data Interpretation is the most important topic for Scale I. A large share of the Quant questions come from DI sets that mix arithmetic concepts like profit and loss or ratio, so practise DI before jumping into mocks.

General Awareness, Computer and Language

The syllabus for these three is exactly the same as Office Assistant. Focus on current affairs of the last six months, banking awareness with rural banking weightage, computer fundamentals and your chosen language.

For the interview stage, you will be asked about banking, your graduation subjects and current affairs. A daily habit of reading financial news pays off in both Mains and the interview. The final score combines Mains and Interview in an 80:20 ratio, so interview preparation matters after you qualify.

Negative Marking and Merit Rules

Many candidates lose 5 to 10 marks in Mains purely from blind guessing. The penalty applies to every stage, Prelims, Mains and the single examination for higher posts.

• For each question answered wrong, one fourth, or 0.25, of the marks assigned to that question is deducted as penalty.
• If you leave a question blank, there is no penalty for it.
• Since some Mains questions carry more than 1 mark (for example Reasoning has 50 marks for 40 questions), a wrong answer there costs more than a wrong answer in a 1 mark section.

Example: if you attempt 30 Reasoning questions, get 24 correct and 6 wrong, your score is not 30 but 24 minus (6 multiplied by 0.25) equal to 22.5. Over all sections, careless guessing easily drains 8 to 10 marks.

Cutoff and Shortlisting

• Office Assistant: you must score a minimum in each test of Mains to be considered for provisional allotment. State wise vacancies decide the cutoff.
• Officer Scale I: you must score a minimum in each test of Mains to be shortlisted for the interview. IBPS calls candidates up to three times the declared vacancies per category for the interview, subject to availability.
• Clearing sectional cutoffs is not enough. You also need a high total score in order of merit, because final selection depends on the merit list.

How Final Merit Is Decided

• Office Assistant: only the marks obtained in the Online Main Examination count for final merit listing. Prelims is purely qualifying. There is no interview.
• Officer Scale I: only the Mains marks count for shortlisting for interview and final merit. Interview carries 100 marks with a minimum qualifying score of 40 percent, or 35 percent for SC, ST, OBC and PwBD candidates.
• The weightage of online exam and interview is 80:20 for the officers cadre.
• Scores from different sessions are normalised using the equi percentile method, and scores up to two decimals are used for calculation.
• If two candidates score equal marks, the older candidate by date of birth is placed higher in merit.

Since every mark counts on the merit list, the sections most aspirants ignore, General Awareness, English and Computer Knowledge, become your biggest advantage. Your quant score will be close to thousands of others. Your awareness and language score decides where you stand.

Exam Medium and Language Choice

In the online application you will select the medium of examination. For Office Assistant and Officer Scale I, the tests are available in English, Hindi and the regional language of the State or UT you apply for, as listed in the notification.

• Except the language section, all tests are available in multiple media such as English, Hindi, and regional languages like Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Odia, Punjabi, Urdu and Assamese depending on the State.
• In Mains you choose 4a English or 4b Hindi as your language section. This choice is separate from the medium of the other tests.
• Choose the medium you read fastest in. For the language section, pick the language where your grammar and comprehension are strongest.
• If there is any difference between the English version and the translated version, the English version prevails.

Preparation Strategy for IBPS RRB 2026

Prelims is a speed test, Mains is a merit test. You should prepare both together from September, because Mains comes within weeks of the Prelims result and General Awareness cannot be crammed.

Build Your Section Priorities

• Reasoning: puzzles and seating arrangements first, then syllogism and inequality for quick marks. One full puzzle set daily with a timer.
• Quant and Numerical Ability: simplification, number series and DI first. These give the fastest marks in both stages.
• General Awareness: 25 to 30 minutes daily for current affairs of the last six months plus banking awareness. Weekly revision is essential.
• Computer Knowledge: 15 to 20 minutes on alternate days. It is factual and adds safe marks.
• English or Hindi: 15 minutes of reading plus grammar practice daily. Comprehension speed matters in both stages.

Mock Test Practice

• From October, solve mocks with strict sectional timing. In Prelims you get 25 minutes for Reasoning and 20 minutes for Quant. In Mains you get fixed time per section, and you cannot carry unused time forward.
• Analyse every wrong answer. Track accuracy per section, not just the total score.
• Guard against negative marking by attempting only when you can eliminate at least one option. Leaving a doubtful question blank is safer than guessing.

Most candidates spend their time on aptitude and treat awareness and English as afterthoughts. That is exactly why selection happens in those two subjects. Master current affairs, banking awareness and your language section daily, and you gain a massive edge over the crowd. While everyone fights for marks in puzzles and DI, smart aspirants win by dominating the sections others neglect.
