Quick Summary
Introduction
The SSC CPO exam pattern for 2026 has changed completely. The SSC CPO 2026 notification dated 10.09.2026 confirms a new short format with sectional timers, revised marks, and tougher negative marking in Paper 2.
The SSC CPO Paper 1 now carries 100 marks for 100 questions in 1 hour, with 15 minutes fixed for each of the four parts. The SSC CPO Paper 2 now carries 320 marks for 160 questions in 1 hour, with English alone carrying 200 marks. This guide covers the official Paper 1 and Paper 2 syllabus, marks distribution, selection process, previous year paper weightage, and a clear preparation plan.
If you are starting SSC CPO exam preparation now, read this guide first. It saves you from following old YouTube videos and blogs that still show the old 200 marks pattern.
SSC CPO Exam Pattern 2026
The SSC CPO exam pattern in 2026 includes two computer based papers with sectional timers, physical tests between the papers, and a medical test at the end. The SSC CPO Paper 1 tests four subjects for 100 marks and the SSC CPO Paper 2 tests four parts for 320 marks with heavy focus on English.
Paper 1 Pattern
The SSC CPO Paper 1 is the screening test. Only candidates who clear the SSC CPO Paper 1 cutoff move to PET and PST.
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | General Intelligence and Reasoning | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes |
| II | General Knowledge and General Awareness | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes |
| III | Quantitative Aptitude | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes |
| IV | English Comprehension | 25 | 25 | 15 minutes |
| Total | Four parts | 100 | 100 | 1 hour |
Key rules for SSC CPO Paper 1:
- Mode is Computer Based Test with objective multiple choice questions.
- Each correct answer gives 1 mark. Each wrong answer cuts 0.25 marks.
- Questions in Parts I, II and III are set in both Hindi and English. Part IV is in English only.
- You cannot move extra time from one part to another. The timer locks each part after 15 minutes.
- Marks are normalised if the SSC CPO exam is held in multiple shifts.
Paper 2 Pattern
The SSC CPO Paper 2 is held only for candidates who qualify in PET and PST. The SSC CPO Paper 2 total marks are 320. English alone carries 200 marks in SSC CPO Paper 2, so English decides the final merit to a large extent.
| Part | Subject | Questions | Marks | Time Rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| I | General Intelligence and Reasoning | 20 | 40 | 20 minutes sectional timer |
| II | General Knowledge and General Awareness | 20 | 40 | 20 minutes sectional timer |
| III | Quantitative Aptitude | 20 | 40 | 20 minutes sectional timer |
| IV | English Comprehension | 100 | 200 | 20 minutes sectional timer |
| Total | Four parts | 160 | 320 | 1 hour as per notice |
Key rules for SSC CPO Paper 2:
- Each question in Parts I, II and III carries 2 marks. Each English question in Part IV also carries 2 marks.
- Each wrong answer in SSC CPO Paper 2 cuts 0.50 marks. This penalty is double the Paper 1 penalty, so blind guessing is risky.
- The notice states that Paper 2 difficulty will be higher than Paper 1 difficulty.
- Questions in Parts I, II and III are set in Hindi and English.
Warning: Many websites still show the old SSC CPO pattern of 200 questions for 200 marks in each paper with 2 hours time. That old pattern does not apply to SSC CPO 2026. Follow the 100 marks and 320 marks tables above from the notification dated 10.09.2026.
How Selection Works
The SSC CPO selection process connects Paper 1, physical tests, Paper 2 and medical tests in a fixed order. The SSC CPO selection process for 2026 has four mandatory stages and candidates must clear each stage to move to the next stage.
| Stage | Test | Nature |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | SSC CPO Paper 1 (Computer Based) | Screening and shortlisting for PET and PST |
| 2 | Physical Standard Test and Physical Endurance Test | Qualifying only, no marks added |
| 3 | SSC CPO Paper 2 (Computer Based) | Shortlisting for medical |
| 4 | Detailed Medical Examination and Document Verification | Qualifying only, final check |
Minimum Qualifying Marks
Candidates must score minimum qualifying marks in SSC CPO Paper 1 and Paper 2 without adding NCC bonus marks. The SSC CPO qualifying marks are fixed category wise.
| Category | Minimum Marks Needed |
|---|---|
| UR (Unreserved) | 30 percent |
| OBC and EWS | 25 percent |
| All other categories (SC, ST and others) | 20 percent |
SSC can fix higher cutoff marks in each part of Paper 1 based on vacancies and number of candidates. Clearing the minimum percentage alone does not guarantee selection for PET and PST.
NCC Bonus Marks
NCC certificate holders get bonus marks in SSC CPO Paper 1 and Paper 2. The bonus is added to normalised scores.
| NCC Certificate | Bonus in Each Paper |
|---|---|
| NCC C Certificate | 5 percent of maximum marks |
| NCC B Certificate | 3 percent of maximum marks |
| NCC A Certificate | 2 percent of maximum marks |
The certificate must be valid as on the closing date of applications, which is 30.09.2026.
Final Merit Logic
The SSC CPO 2026 notice states that final selection and post allocation will be made on the basis of performance in SSC CPO Paper 2 (including NCC bonus) and the preference of posts and forces filled by candidates. PET, PST and medical tests are qualifying in nature. Ex-Servicemen do not need to appear in PET, but they must pass PST, written papers and medical standards.
For complete vacancy, age limit and physical standards, read our SSC CPO Notification 2026 and SSC CPO Eligibility 2026.
Paper 1 Syllabus Guide

There are many current affairs sources available, such as newspapers and coaching PDFs. The Scoreclever Current Affairs Website stands out because it provides detailed daily coverage for complete understanding, with two crisp daily PDFs on Scoreclever’s Telegram channel: a Banking PDF for banking exams and an SSC Plus PDF for SSC, Railways and Defence exams. You can verify coverage of real exam questions through our performance reports.
Quantitative Aptitude
This part tests correct use of numbers and number sense. The SSC CPO maths syllabus includes computation of whole numbers, decimals, fractions, percentage, ratio and proportion, square roots, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership business, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work, basic algebraic identities of school algebra, elementary surds, graphs of linear equations, triangles and their centres, congruence and similarity of triangles, circles, tangents, quadrilaterals, regular polygons, prisms, cones, cylinders, spheres, hemispheres, pyramids, trigonometric ratios, degree and radian measures, standard identities, complementary angles, heights and distances, histogram, frequency polygon, bar diagram and pie chart.
English Comprehension
This part tests understanding of English. The SSC CPO English syllabus for Paper 1 includes error recognition, filling in the blanks with verbs, prepositions and articles, vocabulary, spellings, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, sentence completion, phrases and idiomatic use of words, and comprehension.
Maths Topic Weightage
The SSC CPO maths topic wise weightage helps you decide where to spend time. The SSC CPO maths syllabus is wide, but previous year papers show a clear pattern. Arithmetic forms the base, while geometry, mensuration, trigonometry and data interpretation decide the score gap.
| Topic Group | Topics Included | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Arithmetic | Percentage, ratio and proportion, averages, interest, profit and loss, discount, partnership, mixture and alligation, time and distance, time and work | Asked every year, easy to score with practice |
| Number System | Whole numbers, decimals, fractions, square roots, simplification | Builds speed for all other topics |
| Algebra and Surds | Basic algebraic identities, elementary surds, graphs of linear equations | 2 to 4 questions typically in SSC papers |
| Geometry | Triangles, centres of triangles, congruence and similarity, circles, chords, tangents, quadrilaterals, regular polygons | Needs diagrams and theorem clarity |
| Mensuration | Prism, cone, cylinder, sphere, hemisphere, rectangular box, pyramid with triangular or square base | Formula based, high accuracy possible |
| Trigonometry | Ratios, degree and radian measures, standard identities, complementary angles, heights and distances | 2 to 4 questions often seen |
| Data Interpretation | Histogram, frequency polygon, bar diagram, pie chart | Scoring if you read graphs fast |
How to use this table:
- Finish arithmetic first because it also helps in data interpretation and time based sums.
- Give separate short slots to geometry, mensuration and trigonometry. These three need daily formula revision.
- Practise 25 questions in 15 minutes regularly. The SSC CPO Paper 1 gives only 15 minutes for 25 quant questions, so speed matters more than before.
Paper 2 English Guide
The SSC CPO Paper 2 total marks are 320 for 160 questions. The English part alone carries 200 marks for 100 questions, while reasoning, GK and quant together carry 120 marks. The SSC CPO Paper 2 syllabus for English is the same base as Paper 1 English, but the difficulty level is higher.
Direct answer: SSC CPO Paper 2 carries 320 total marks in 2026. Part IV English carries 200 marks for 100 questions, and each of Parts I, II and III carries 40 marks for 20 questions. Each wrong answer cuts 0.50 marks.
English Topics to Master
- Error recognition and sentence structure
- Filling in the blanks using verbs, prepositions and articles
- Vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, spellings
- Sentence completion, phrases and idioms
- Comprehension passages
English Strategy That Works
English is the merit maker in SSC CPO 2026. While everyone focuses on aptitude, smart aspirants know selection happens in Current Affairs linked GK and English. Your quant score will be similar to thousands of others. Your English score decides if you get selected.
Use this simple plan:
- Learn 15 new words daily with smart revision after 1 day, 3 days and 7 days. Revise with flashcards and weekly tests so meanings stay in memory.
- Read one editorial daily for comprehension and note grammar rules used in long sentences. Practise error spotting and sentence improvement in the same sitting.
- Attempt English in strict 20 minute blocks. In SSC CPO Paper 2 you get about 12 seconds per English question on average if time is split equally, so fast reading is essential.
Is CPO Same as CGL?
Is SSC CPO and SSC CGL syllabus same. No. The SSC CPO and SSC CGL syllabi share the same four subjects, but the SSC CPO exam pattern, physical stage and English weightage make SSC CPO very different from SSC CGL.
| Point | SSC CPO 2026 | SSC CGL 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Subjects | Reasoning, GK, Quant, English in both papers | Reasoning, Awareness, Quant, English plus computer and stats for some posts |
| Paper 1 marks | 100 marks, 100 questions, 1 hour | 200 marks, 100 questions, 1 hour |
| Paper 2 focus | English heavy (200 of 320 marks) plus reasoning, GK and quant | Maths, reasoning, English, awareness plus computer for all posts |
| Physical test | Mandatory PET and PST between Paper 1 and Paper 2 | No physical test for most posts |
| Final merit | Based on Paper 2 performance as per 2026 notice | Based on Tier 2 performance |
| Difficulty | Moderate written level, but physical and English pressure is high | Higher maths and reasoning depth |
If you are preparing for both exams, your reasoning, quant and GK base will help in both. But SSC CPO needs daily running practice and much stronger English, while SSC CGL needs deeper maths and computer awareness.
Is SSC CPO Tough?
Is SSC CPO tough. The SSC CPO written paper is moderate for a graduate, but the SSC CPO exam is tough because of three filters together: sectional timers, physical tests and English heavy Paper 2.
Three reasons candidates find SSC CPO tough:
- Time pressure is real. You get only 15 minutes per part in Paper 1 and about 20 minutes per part in Paper 2. You cannot borrow time from an easy section.
- Physical tests remove many written toppers. Male candidates must run 1.6 km in 6.5 minutes and clear jumps and shot put. Female candidates must run 800 metres in 4 minutes and clear jumps. Start physical training with Paper 1 preparation, not after the result.
- English decides merit. With 100 English questions for 200 marks in Paper 2 and 0.50 negative marking, weak grammar and slow reading pull the total down fast.
The good part: the syllabus is fixed and repeats from previous year papers. With planned study and daily physical practice, an average graduate can clear SSC CPO in one focused attempt.
PYQ Weightage Analysis
The SSC CPO previous year paper is the best guide to topic weightage. The SSC CPO previous year question paper shows that reasoning and English are stable scoring areas, quant repeats formula types, and GK mixes static topics with current events.
How to Use PYQs by Subject
- Reasoning: Solve the last 3 years of SSC CPO previous year papers topic wise. Mark coding decoding, analogies, series, Venn diagrams and embedded figures. These give quick marks.
- GK: Note which static chapters repeat, such as Polity, History, Geography and Science, and which current affairs months were asked. Revise those months from crisp PDFs instead of re reading full news.
- Quant: List every quant question by chapter. You will see arithmetic plus mensuration, geometry, trigonometry and data interpretation cover most marks. Practise only those chapters in timed sets.
- English: Collect all error spots, idioms, synonyms, antonyms and comprehension themes. Make a personal error notebook and revise it weekly.
PYQ Method in 4 Steps
- Solve one SSC CPO previous year paper in exact sectional time.
- Check answers and write the chapter name next to each mistake.
- Revise only those chapters for 3 days.
- Re attempt the same paper. Your score should rise by 10 to 15 percent.
A mock test helps only if you analyse the paper the same day and fix weak chapters before the next mock.
Preparation Strategy
The SSC CPO preparation strategy that works is simple: fixed syllabus, daily timers, English depth and physical training together.
- Give 3 slots daily: quant and reasoning for speed, GK and English for depth, 30 minutes for running and jumps. Do not keep physical training for later.
- Use SSC CPO syllabus 2026 PDF and SSC CPO syllabus in Hindi if Hindi medium suits you. The notice allows Hindi medium for Parts I, II and III. Practise mocks in your final medium only.
- For SSC CPO books, use one standard reasoning practice book, one quant practice book and one GK base book plus monthly current affairs. For English grammar and vocabulary, stick to dedicated practice with exercises instead of collecting many guides. Do not collect 10 books. Finish one set twice.
- Track SSC CPO Paper 2 exam date and SSC CPO mains exam date updates only on ssc.gov.in. The 2026 notice says the computer based exam schedule will be notified later. Do not trust random dates on social media.
- Revise with active recall. Write formulas, word meanings and GK facts from memory, then check. Short daily revision beats long weekend reading.
